Ocean Asia Logistics was engaged by a leading engineering, procurement, and construction contractor to execute the end-to-end transportation and handling of multiple oversized and heavy-lift cargo shipments destined for a major power generation infrastructure project. The consignment included two 85-metric-ton power transformers, four 40-ton generator stators, and various auxiliary components such as cooling radiators, control panels, and steel structures. Due to the dimensional and weight exceedances—far beyond standard containerized freight parameters—the project required specialized engineering surveys, route reconnaissance, custom fabrication of lifting frames, and multi-modal transport coordination from Colombo port to a remote inland project site.
The operation commenced at the Colombo port with the discharge of break-bulk and project cargo vessels. Ocean Asia Logistics deployed a dedicated project cargo handling team equipped with multi-axle hydraulic modular trailers, telescopic boom cranes, and heavy-duty lifting spreader bars. Each oversized component was carefully lifted from the vessel hold using port-approved mobile cranes under the supervision of certified riggers and lifting supervisors. All cargo was secured onto customized steel cradles and low-bed platforms, with weight distribution meticulously calculated to comply with axle load regulations and port infrastructure limitations. Our team also conducted ultrasonic thickness testing and structural integrity assessments on lifting points prior to commencement.
Transportation planning involved an extensive route survey spanning over 220 kilometers from Colombo to the project site. Ocean Asia Logistics engineers conducted bridge load capacity assessments, overhead utility line measurements, and road width verifications along the proposed corridor. Identified obstacles—including low-hanging power cables, narrow roundabouts, and weight-restricted culverts—were addressed through coordinated temporary utility diversions, road closures, and structural reinforcements in consultation with the Road Development Authority and Ceylon Electricity Board. Police escorts and pilot vehicles accompanied the convoy throughout the journey, managing traffic and public safety at critical pinch points.
The unloading and final positioning phase required extreme precision, as the transformers had to be placed onto plinths within confined powerhouse structures. Ocean Asia Logistics utilized skidding systems, hydraulic jacks, and precision alignment tools to inch the cargo into final position with millimeter-level accuracy. Our rigging team worked in continuous coordination with the client’s installation engineers to ensure correct orientation and leveling prior to grouting. All lifting and skidding operations were executed under strict safety protocols, with exclusion zones enforced and real-time load monitoring systems in place throughout the process.
